Everyone has that one local barista who makes steaming, pouring, and brewing look super cool. To be fair, it is. Makes you wonder if you’ll ever get a chance to pour out latte art yourself, doesn’t it? Sure, not everyone is going to be a barista in their lifetime, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have a go at it at all.
Ruang Seduh, translated to ‘brewing room’, is the solution for all the coffee-loving, barista-admiring people who don’t see themselves taking up the mantel anytime soon. Created by the people at ABCD School of Coffee, the interactive spaces located in Jakarta and Jogja give people the chance to take their order in their own hands.
The Jogja branch of Ruang Seduh is located in trendy neighborhood of Prawirotaman and sits in a compact all-white space down one of the quieter streets. Inside, you can expect to see a black Darth Vader Mahlkönig grinder – the yin to its sister shop’s yang – and a host of other coffee tools and toys. Decor is clean and simple – almost lab-like – with hints of old Jogjakartan design as seen in the faded yellow tiles the line the sitting room in the back. It’s minimalist interiors make it especially popular amongst would-be photographers.
To make your own drink, just tell the friendly baristas that you want to have a go after you place your order. No need to be intimidated – baristas get a bad rap as judgemental know-it-all’s but that really isn’t true, especially here. The aim here is to bring you, the drinker, closer to the drink that we all so love.
The open concept coffee bar allows for patrons to shuffle about the work area as they brew themselves a cup. Brewing techniques include the Walkure pour over method and of course, the classic espresso-based approach. The baristas will walk you through every step of the process, so don’t worry about get a burn from your first time on the steam wand. Their beans are in constant rotation, so be sure to ask what they’re using at the time of your visit.
If you’d prefer to have someone else make your drink for you, just sit back and relax, but to be fair, it’s the fun of trying your own hand at making coffee that makes the shop so special. A cup of coffee, a pastry, and a magazine in Ruang Seduh is as good a way as any to wait out the heat before exploring the area. For the coffee enthusiast who’d like to try their hand – and see if they have a future in brewing – this is as good a chance as any to try your luck.
